Animals escaped a  wild animal preserve in Zanesville, Ohio after the owner of the preserve set the animals free and then killed himself. 49 animals were killed, including 18 Bengal tigers, 17 lions, six black bears, a pair of grizzlies, three mountain lions, two wolves and a baboon.

 STRAIGHT FROM THE NEWS ARTICLE. “Animal rights advocates agreed there was little local authorities could have done to save the dangerous creatures once they began roaming the area.” It’s SO unfortunate. And I wish that there had been another way… I wish they could have captured them all and that they all could have gone to live happy animal lives at zoos and other animal preserves… But there was nothing else they could do… Even the men DOING the shooting wished they didn’t have to.  

-Will Travers, chief executive of the California-based Born Free USA animal welfare and wildlife conservation organization, said police had no choice but to take the action they did.

-Jack Hanna, TV personality and former director of the Columbus Zoo, also defended the sheriff’s decision to kill the animals, calling deaths of the endangered Bengal tigers especially tragic.

it sucks so bad… but you have to see how hard the decision was for the officers to make, and how they just couldn’t let all those animals roam free. Most had been de-clawed and bottle-fed… They never would have survived in the wild, and the risk of them getting into the community couldn’t be taken.
